The Ancient Priors is a medieval building that sits in a corner of the world, on the side of a street, and on a lane on a bluff. This building has had many names, and has been many things over the centuries. It has housed priests, and has been a farmhouse, a hotel and an inn. It has been an estate, a duplex, a hair dresser parlor and candy shop, a pub and a restaurant. It has housed stables and coaches. It has held up lofty hopes and dreams, and has almost been torn down due to disrepair.
This building is only made of mortar, brick and wood, but carries with it the echoes and memories of all those who have walked through it in the past 8 centuries. It has always been a reliable landmark—always there, always visible—imprinting its form and structure on countless generations. The only thing unreliable about it is where to hang your hat, due to all the renovations and changes made to its identity and purpose.
Yet its very consistency is also its core mutability. Centuries of changes has made the Ancient Priors’ essence of constancy into the very essence of change.
In statistical analysis, “Priors” are inferences based on underlying assumptions which may actually change the probability of certain outcomes. For instance, if you have a box of red and blue ping pong balls, the probability of picking one color changes based on prior assumptions. Assuming random numbers of colored balls, the probability of one color is higher the more you pick of that color. Assuming a fixed number of balls, the probability of one color goes down as you remove balls of that color. The box is still the same, the numbers of colors haven’t actually changed, but the probability goes up and down based on nothing more or less than the “Priors”.
Brick and mortar may last for centuries, yet let us always remember that the colors with which we paint our buildings are drawn from an ever-changing well of possibility, and will always be most likely to change.
Like our namesakes, Priors Press embraces both constancy and change. Like the Ancient Priors, we remain a stable ground, welcoming hundreds and thousands of stories from all walks of life, and enabling these stories and lives’ echoes to remain long after their storytellers have left. Likewise, like the statistical ‘Priors’, we deal with likely outcomes for any given situation, and use various tools and techniques to influence a more positive outcome.
